Galerie Alexis Pentcheff, Modern Painting and Works on Paper, 1850–1950

Founded in Marseille in 2009 by Alexis and Giulia Pentcheff, Galerie Alexis Pentcheff specializes in modern French painting and works on paper from 1850 to 1950, with a particular affinity for Post-Impressionism, the Nabis and Fauvism. True to its Marseille roots, it pays particular attention to the artists inspired by the light of the Mediterranean.

A Gallery of Modern Painting in Marseilles

The gallery presents works by artists including Pierre Bonnard, Albert Marquet, Henri Martin, Henri Manguin, Louis Valtat, André Lhote and Henri Lebasque, and helps to bring lesser-known artists back to light.
It also champions singular figures such as Joseph Inguimberty, Paul Jouve, Bernard Buffet and René Gruau, whose studio collection it has held since 2018, the largest collection of the artist’s original works.

Based since 2023 at the Pavillon de la Reine Jeanne, a historic seafront house in the cove of Malmousque, the gallery welcomes collectors and institutions for the purchase, sale and expert appraisal of artworks. Alexis and Giulia Pentcheff are both experts in painting accredited by the Chambre Nationale des Experts Spécialisés (CNES), and the gallery is a member of the SNA. It has held more than thirty temporary exhibitions on its premises, both monographic and thematic, each accompanied by a catalogue. Over the years, it has built relationships of trust with artists’ families and heirs, working alongside them to pass on their legacy through exhibitions and publications. The gallery regularly lends works to museums in France and abroad. It takes part in major international art fairs: TEFAF Maastricht, BRAFA in Brussels, Fine Arts Paris and the Salon du Dessin in Paris.

Since 2015, the gallery has relied on its own restoration and framing workshops in Marseille. Ateliers Pentcheff restore artworks and antique frames, and offer a wide selection of period frames from the 16th to the 20th century, as well as made-to-measure frames inspired by historical models. Serving the gallery’s own works, this expertise is also available to collectors, dealers and institutions.
