Galerie Alexis PENTCHEFF

The Alexis Pentcheff gallery is pleased to welcome you in this space devoted to painting.
Throughout these pages, you will discover particular works of iconic artists who painted in Provence between the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century.

The Provencal School:
Following the lead of  Emile Loubon, director of the School of Fine Arts in Marseille from 1845, many talented students, including Raphaël Ponson, turn Provence into an open-air workshop.
Likewise, the precocious artists’ eyes of Adolphe Monticelli, Paul Guigou, Alfred Casile, Jean-Baptiste Olive, Joseph and David Garibaldi Dellepiane are all testimony of the vitality of Marseille of the past.

The momentum of modernity:
At the turn of the twentieth century Seyssaud, Verdilhan and Chabaud are the standard-bearers of modernity in Provence.
All along the French Riviera, the region also attracts avant-garde artists. Henri Manguin, Charles Camoin, Albert Marquet, and Louis Valtat sharpen their brushes in the southern light and convert the South of France into a land of artistic experimentation.

Traveling painters:
The Gateway to the East, Marseille has always been an open window on the Mediterranean. Orientalists evoke fascinating images of their travels in North Africa.
Some artists also embark from Marseille to destinations further afield, such as Joseph Inguimberty, who will spend more than twenty years in Asia.

The gallery also hosts the works of other renowned artists, French or foreign alike.
